The Singapore I Know…

Linda Aw Liang Mui:

Growing Up In The Singapore I Know

In the 1960’s, my family and I lived in an attap house. I was the eldest of five siblings. I have three younger sisters and a younger brother.

In the 1970’s, I served in the Singapore Armed Forces for 10 years. It was my first job upon graduating from Secondary School.

Little did I know that one day, we will all be living in HDB Flats. By the time I got married in the 1980’s, I was able to own a purchased flat with my husband at the age of 28 years old. I gave birth to 3 beautiful children between 1982 and 1990.

I returned to the workforce in 2000 as a customer service staff. When WSQ was set up, I took the opportunity to upskill.

Today, I am working at Changi General Hospital as a Senior Radiography Assistant. This is the Singapore I know, a place with opportunities for everyone, regardless of age, language or religion.

Cayden Lim Xuan Le:

I am Cayden. I was born in 2015 when Singapore turned 50 years old. I grew up living in a HDB block and all I see around me are nice, tall buildings.

I love rockets and spaceships. One day, we will commute in Singapore from HDB block to HDB block on a rainbow-coloured rocket. I believe!

I love roti prata. It is my favourite local food. I am going to create a curry-hotdog-prata-with-curls, which will become a popular local dish. I believe!

I love to run. I enjoy racing and I want to win a gold trophy for Singapore one day. I believe I can!

I am proud to be a Singaporean. I love my family! I love my country! I love my home!
